Water pipes run across your home to reach your bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. A hole in any pipe is certainly cause for concern because it not only wastes water, but it also compromises the structural soundness of your walls and floors. This guide equips you with quick actions to seal the hole until your plumber arrives. If the pipe is concealed within a wall, call your plumber immediately to prevent major problems later.

Shut Off The Main Water Switch For The Pipe

If you know where the hole is located, your first action should be to turn off the main water switch connected to the pipe. This will stop the flow of water and will allow you to seal the area until a reliable plumber applies a more lasting fix. Wipe off any water from the floor and around the pipe. Once the main water switch is turned off, wait for a couple of hours before your sealing job. This will give the pipe enough time to dry.

Clean The Pipe Hole Area

Before applying the epoxy sealant, you will need to clean the area around the hole to remove any mildew, dirt and rust. This will make it easier for the sealant to adhere to the hole. Mix vinegar and water in a spray bottle in equal quantities and apply this solution against the area around the hole. Scrub with a toothbrush or abrasive cloth to remove the dirt and debris. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which penetrates through dirt and lifts it off the surface. Wipe the area with a cloth to dry it completely.

Use Epoxy Sealant To Seal The Hole

Epoxy sealant is a supple paste-like substance which can be purchased at any hardware or home improvement shop. The sealant will harden over the hole to close it up. Epoxy sealant typically comes in a tube. Place some of the sealant adhesive on your gloved hand and use your finger to press it into the hole on the pipe. Make sure you cover the entire area around the hole to prevent water from seeping through. The epoxy sealant will begin to set. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding drying time, but try to keep the space properly ventilated to expedite the process. Once dry, turn on the main water switch and run the tap to ensure the hole is fixed until a reliable plumber arrives.

These quick actions will enable you to use your taps without any trouble until your plumber arrives to repair or replace the pipes.
